[Tested] Can You Generate Yuki-onna? Pale Skin, Visible Cold Breath, and a Loosened White Juban

[Tested] Can You Generate Yuki-onna? Pale Skin, Visible Cold Breath, and a Loosened White Juban

Key Takeaways

  • deathly pale skin removed the blood tone from the face in 3 out of 3 images, leaving porcelain-white skin. In 2 of the 3, redness settled around the eyes — the strongest inhuman impression of all conditions.
  • pale bluish white skin whitened the skin about as much as deathly pale, but a clear blue tint appeared in only 1 out of 3 images. Blue is hard to get in a moonlit snow scene.
  • cold breath visible drew a white breath mist in 3 out of 3 images. As a side effect, all three compositions turned to profile or upward-gazing poses.
  • The loosened white juban was rendered as “an off-shoulder figure wrapped in white cloth.” Bare shoulders and collarbones appear in 3 out of 3 images, but kimono details like the collar and sleeves disappear.
  • [Follow-up] The missing blue tint was the phrase’s fault, not the scene’s. The proven unnaturally pale bluish-white skin from another article produced a blue tint in 3 out of 3 images even in the snow scene, refuting the main experiment’s hypothesis.
  • [Follow-up] corpse-like pallor, ashen skin creates the most death-adjacent face, with sunken, shadowed eyes. The four bloodless-skin phrasings each turn into a different direction of inhumanity, so you can pick by intent.

The Yuki-onna Motif

Yuki-onna is the yokai of a beautiful, pale-skinned woman who appears on snowy nights. Horror and allure coexist in the motif from the start, and it breaks down into three elements:

  1. Pale, bloodless skin — the core of the “not among the living” impression; we compare two phrasings
  2. Cold-air staging — visible breath and freezing air
  3. The allure of white garments — swapping the kimono for a loosened juban (under-kimono)

In our J-horror escalation test, unnaturally pale bluish-white skin achieved blue-gray skin in 3 out of 3 images in an abandoned-hospital scene. This time we move the stage to a moonlit snowfield and check whether skin-tone directives still get through in an all-white scene.

Observations: All three deliver every requested element — a snowy forest with a visible moon, a white kimono, and snow settling in her hair. Scene fidelity is high even at baseline. Skin has a normal blood tone with red in the lips and cheeks. Kimono details such as the obi and collar are drawn in all three.

Observations: The cheeks lose their blood tone in 3 out of 3 images, leaving porcelain-like skin. At seeds 43 and 44, redness settles around the eyes; the contrast between bloodshot-looking eyes and white skin strengthens the not-quite-human impression. This is the same by-product we observed with pale skin in the J-horror test. Of the five conditions, this one contributed most to the Yuki-onna look.

A02: pale bluish white skin

Observations: Whitening is comparable to A01, but a clearly visible blue tint appears in only 1 out of 3 images (seed 44’s cool-toned face). Seed 42 retains red in the cheeks and lips. In the J-horror test’s abandoned hospital with flashlight lighting, a similar phrase turned skin blue-gray in 3 out of 3 images — so we first suspected the moonlit snowscape suppresses the blue. But the follow-up C04 below, using that article’s exact phrase, produced the blue tint in 3 out of 3 images even in snow. The difference comes from the phrase, not the scene.

A03: Cold-Air Staging

Observations: A white breath mist flows from her mouth in 3 out of 3 images. It’s one of the few ways to make cold air visible, and it pairs well with snow scenes. As a side effect, all three faces turn sideways (seeds 42, 43) or tilt upward (seed 44); no frontal composition appeared — apparently the composition shifts to let the breath stream sideways.

B01: Loosened White Juban

Observations: Both shoulders and the collarbones are exposed in 3 out of 3 images — the “slipping off her shoulders” directive works. At seed 44 the neckline reveals cleavage. However, the juban’s kimono details (collar crossing, sleeves, ties) are simplified away in all three, leaving something closer to an off-shoulder figure wrapped in draped white cloth. The combination of snowy night + moonlight + exposed skin itself holds together without breakage.

Follow-up: Exploring the Bloodless-Skin Vocabulary

Observations: white lips was rendered literally as “lips painted with white lipstick” in 3 out of 3 images. The skin whitens somewhat, but the visual center of the result is the white-lip makeup look. Rather than removing blood tone, the output went in a different direction: “an inhuman figure in white lip makeup.” All three are frontal compositions.

C02: corpse-like pallor, ashen skin

Observations: In 3 out of 3 images the skin whitens and dark circles settle around the eyes, leaving them sunken. Seed 44 — a hollow, upturned stare with dark lips — is the most death-adjacent face of all 27 images. The whole image also desaturates toward near-monochrome. If you want maximum horror, this phrase is the first choice.

C03: ghostly translucent white skin

Observations: Actual translucency — skin or background showing through — appears in 0 out of 3 images. Instead, 2 out of 3 (seeds 43, 44) get a bluish, painted-white complexion. Seed 42 stays weakly whitened with red still in the lips. translucent doesn’t work literally; it partially functions as a paraphrase for “ghostly whiteness.”

C04: unnaturally pale bluish-white skin (Retesting the Proven Phrase)

Observations: A clear blue tint appears on the skin in 3 out of 3 images. Seed 42 leans greenish-blue; seeds 43 and 44 are blue-gray white — all three complexions read as inhuman at a glance. The contrast with the main experiment’s pale bluish white skin (blue in 1 of 3) is decisive: the blue tint is achievable in the snow scene, and the phrase was what mattered. We hereby reject the main experiment’s hypothesis that the moonlit snowscape suppresses blue.

Discussion

Phrasing, not scene, decides the blue tint

In the main experiment pale bluish white skin produced blue in only 1 of 3 images, and we hypothesized that the moonlit snowscape suppresses blue. But follow-up C04, using the abandoned-hospital test’s exact phrase unnaturally pale bluish-white skin, produced the blue tint in 3 out of 3 images in the same snow scene. Hypothesis rejected. Even similar-looking word sequences diverge sharply with the presence of unnaturally and exact phrasing — don’t paraphrase a proven phrase; use it verbatim.

Bloodless-skin phrases fork into four kinds of inhumanity

All four follow-up phrases nominally specify “no blood tone,” yet each built a different face: white lip makeup (C01), a corpse’s shadowed face (C02), a painted-white look (C03), and blue-gray skin (C04). They differ in direction, not just strength — so choose the phrase to match your interpretation of Yuki-onna, from beautiful otherworldly being to something much closer to the dead.

Make cold visible through breath

The temperature feeling that abstract words like freezing air rarely put on screen was delivered by cold breath visible as a concrete visual element (breath mist) in 3 out of 3 images. Whether the profile-view side effect can be suppressed by explicitly requesting a frontal composition is a topic for future testing.

Loosened kimono gets translated into “cloth slipping off”

The juban’s traditional details were not reproduced; the concept was rounded into “white cloth slipping off the shoulders.” To keep the kimono identity while loosening it, you likely need to specify collar and obi elements individually (untested).

Note: The eye redness from deathly pale skin is an unrequested by-product, but against the white skin it reads either as “after crying” or as “something not human.” It matched the Yuki-onna narrative surprisingly well.

The Yuki-onna building blocks are all here: a skin phrase (picked by intent) + cold breath visible + a loosened white garment. Current recommendations: deathly pale skin for a beautiful otherworldly being, unnaturally pale bluish-white skin for an at-a-glance inhuman complexion, corpse-like pallor for maximum dread. Whether multiple elements interfere when specified together remains a question for the next test.
