A00: control

Observation: Bust-up to waist-up on a nighttime street. The background consists of general streetlights, shop lighting, and car headlights. Lighting on the face is flat with no illumination-style light effects. Overall color temperature is neutral to slightly cool.

A01: illumination face

Observation: Compared to control, the framing moves closer to a face close-up. The illumination specification generates evenly grid-spaced warm-colored (incandescent) round bokeh lights, clearly distinct from the street lamps in control. Warm light falls on the face, shifting skin tones warmer.

A02: illumination bust

Observation: Framing is bust-up. The background shows illumination wrapped around street trees (small warm to white light points), combined with tree branch silhouettes. Compared to A01, the light points are smaller and more dense, creating a natural illumination look integrated with the trees. Some seeds show Christmas tree-style illumination.

A03: bokeh lights

Observation: The entire background is filled with large circular bokeh (warm to white). Shallow depth of field with sharp focus on the subject and heavily blurred background — typical portrait composition. A major change from control’s street snapshot style, close to the bokeh seen in illumination photography. 2 out of 3 show tree silhouettes, suggesting a composition with street tree illumination in the background.

A04: fairy lights

Observation: The fairy lights specification generates a curtain of vertical string lights (thread-like lights with evenly spaced light points) in the background. Unlike bokeh lights, the light sources are rendered sharply enough to be individually identified, with a regular array pattern. Light color is whitish. Subject framing is waist-up to bust-up, with depth clearly expressed between the subject and the light curtain backdrop.

A05: neon close

Observation: Very different from other conditions — the background shows neon tubes (straight red, blue, green, pink, yellow light sources). Rather than the warm incandescent glow of illumination, this is multicolored neon sign lighting. The neon colors reflect on the skin causing blue-to-pink color cast. Framing tends toward close-up. If the goal is illumination, this will likely produce unintended results.

A06: led close

Observation: The background shows LED illumination on street trees (warm small lights wrapped around trunk and branches). Similar to A02 (illumination bust) but tends to include a winter snowy scene (snow on the ground, snow on branches). Framing is bust-up, face lighting is warm. Background light density is slightly higher than A02.

A07: backlit illumination

Observation: A curtain of string lights (similar vertical arrangement to fairy lights) is placed behind the subject, creating a backlit effect. The subject’s face exposure is slightly darker with light edges along the outline. Differences from fairy lights: the light source is concentrated directly behind the subject, and the subject is rendered somewhat darker. Framing is waist-up to bust-up.

Summary

For illumination backgrounds with close-up to bust-up framing, bokeh lights most stably generates bokeh that looks like illumination. fairy lights is effective when you want a regular string light pattern. neon close produces neon tubes and is not suited for illumination purposes. backlit illumination can be used when a backlight effect is desired.
